What is a brochure

Brochures are excellent marketing tools intended to promote new products and services, build a company’s image, or give any kind of information. Brochures are graphic pieces that reach existing and potential customers’ hands as a faithful representation of your company. The quality of the paper, the definition of pictures, the colors, the finishes, and folds are fundamental aspects since they will determine, in your customers’ minds, the quality of your company. A brochure that enjoys an excellent design and printing level will have great impact on a large amount of people, who will actually keep it. In this way, a brochure is the embodiment of a company. Considering the great number of companies in the marketplace and on the Internet, this is a fundamental feature.

There are different types of brochure: flyers, bifolds and trifolds. These are promotional tools that you should take into consideration to consolidate your company’s identity. It’s highly recommended to launch an advertising campaign that includes a broad distribution of flyers, and a narrower distribution of high-quality bifolds and trifolds at commercial presentations, on the company’s premises, or by mail. By doing this, your company will make its presence felt among potential and existing customers. Bellow, you will find the characteristic features and common sizes of each type of brochure.

Flyers or leaflets

Flyers are sheets of paper intended to promote a company’s products and services, especially offers. They are targeted at a mass audience, and are generally distributed on the street, at special events or by mail. Flyers are generally small-sized pieces that are as small as or smaller than a letter sheet (8.5’’x 11’’).

As flyers are printed in large quantities, it’s necessary to keep costs down. To do this, flyers are printed on low quality and light paper, and in few colors. Besides, companies generally don’t make big investments in high-quality flyers, since these pieces have a short life, and are only intended to immediately draw the public’s attention. Depending on the available budget and the scale of the promotional campaign, you can have from 500 to 10,000 or more copies printed.

what a brochure is

Bifolds

The main characteristic of these brochures is that they are folded in two, producing four panels or faces (a front panel, two inner panels, and a back panel). Generally, this is obtained when folding a double letter sheet or a single letter sheet, producing 8.5’’x 11’’ o 5.5’’ x 8.5’’ panels, respectively. The front panel should be attractive and striking so as to encourage consumers to keep reading the content in the inner panels. The back panel is usually used to give the company’s contact information (telephone numbers, email addresses, website, street address, opening hours, etc.) Unlike flyers, bifolds can include more information about corporate activities.

Bifolds are generally made of high-quality paper. These are long-lasting pieces that work as a company’s presentation or as small catalogs. For this reason, bifolds should be made of strong paper that allows good photograph definition. In this way, people will keep your bifold. They will read it in detail and will contact you to obtain the products and services offered.

As high-quality and high-cost pieces, bifolds are printed in full color and the print runs are smaller than that of flyers. They are usually distributed at commercial events or by mail. In some cases, bifolds are used as folders with inserts.

Trifolds

Trifolds are brochures obtained from folding a sheet of paper in three, which forms six panels or faces: three outer panels and three inner panels. The average size of an open trifold is a letter sheet, 8.5’’x 11’’ (3.67’’ x 8.5’’ each panel). There are bigger trifolds (double or triple letter) which can cause greater visual impact. Generally, trifolds are made of high-quality paper, glossy or matte text or common paper. Trifolds paper is usually thicker than that of flyers, and is printed in full color –they can also be printed in black and white or in only one color. There are different ways to fold paper to form a trifold. The most common one is placing one of the panels over another vertically. But, as you can see in the section on folds, there are different ways to obtain more original trifolds.

Trifolds are the type of brochure that companies use the most since they bring many advantages. On the one hand, they are very attractive and draw people’s attention. Before a trifold that enjoy a good design and high quality printing, people will want to open it to learn more about what the company offers. On the other hand, thanks to the size of this type of brochures, trifolds meet the requirements needed to be sent via mail, and can be distributed easily. Apart from this, while other graphic pieces are quite small in size, trifolds have enough room to include a great amount of information about a company’s profile and its products and services. For this reason, trifolds become pieces that fully represent a company. Just like bifolds, trifolds can include images describing products in an attractive way. These brochures are usually handed over at commercial or local events, and sent via mail. When a trifold printing and design are excellent, the public will keep the piece, and with it, a company’s representation.
